IT WAS set up to give hope to thousands of people living in appalling conditions in the Philippines.

Now, ten years on, inspirational Jane Walker hopes her Philippine Community Fund (PCF) charity can continue to provide immeasurable help for another decade.

The Hampshire-based charity is marking the landmark with a celebration party at the end of April.

Jane set up the fund following a life-changing trip to the Philippines in 1996.

She witnessed the toil of families living on rubbish dumps in Manila and cemeteries in Navotas, where she made it her aim to set up a day care centre.

The centre was set up and she privately funded it for six years, before realising that the needs of the children were becoming too great for her resources.

The charity was registered in the UK with the Charity Commission in 2002, and with the Security Exchange and Commission in the Philippines in 2003.

Jane, who now lives most of the time in Manila, was awarded an MBE for her outstanding charity work in the Philippines and was named woman of the year by the Woman of the Year Foundation for 2009/10.

The charity provides education for young children, who benefit from its developed nutrition, medical, social care and livelihood programmes.

It has worked hard to stop child labourers working on the dump sites and to get them into education.

Adults living in slums also benefit from PCF’s training projects that offer families an alternative income to waste picking.

Jane said: “The birthday event is twofold. It’s to thank all the supporters for supporting us over the last ten years and to celebrate the achievements the charity has made.

“I couldn’t imagine it (the charity) being what it is now.

“I wanted a holistic approach to child poverty and we needed to get involved in education and nutrition, and needed employment for the children. It’s step by step, year by year growth.”

Despite the success, Jane remains focused and admits every day is a challenge.

She added: “The aim now is making sure the students we do have get well-paid jobs and get the training they need to get jobs.

“The long-term aim is we want to be instrumental in moving and relocating the communities off the dump sites and back into the provinces they came from.

“We are hoping we can get over 100 people to the event.

Even for those people that don’t know anything about the charity, it is a good opportunity to find out more.”

The celebration will take place at Itchen College Hall, Middle Road, Bitterne, on April 27. Guests are advised to attend for 2pm, for a 2.15pm start, and the event will finish at 4pm.

It will give attendees the chance to oversee everything the charity has achieved over the past ten years, as well as fun games and prizes. There will be tea, coffee and cake.

Things are very busy at PCF UK office (as usual!)…

Last week, we moved out of the old office which was also doubling up as a storage area!

We now have a number of ‘office staff’ who are working from home and have a separate storage area for our shop stock.

Before school officially marked its end, there was one last gathering which students, most especially those from PCF were all excited about.

Last March 25, was a day full of celebration and recognition for it is the Graduation Day of the PCF students. The 9^th Commencement Exercises with the theme, “Building the Nation’s Future Leaders through K to 12 Basic Education Program” was held at the PCF Quadrangle.

Thirty seven students from the morning and afternoon class of the Preparatory Department graduated with flying colors and hope for a better future. Class Valedictorian, Jan Mark Talisayon and Salutatorian, Rodelliza Manarang, both delivered speeches that inspired their fellow students. Students were given Virtue and Academic Awards and Food Parcels as a gift from PCF.

On the other hand, 74 students from the Elementary Department moved a step closer to their dreams. Although it rained hard in the afternoon, students patiently waited for this momentous occasion in their lives. In her Salutatory Address, Jessa Balote of VI-Hezekiah stressed out the beauty of learning. “The beautiful thing about learning is that, no one can take it away from you, yes, it’s your wealth.” Performing students were also given Academic and Virtue Awards and Food Parcels.

It was a fruitful School Year for the children of PCF, for they have gained knowledge, shared friendship and showed love towards each other. There will be more years for the students to dream and to attain these dreams, as the class Valedictorian, Ma. Fe Tabios said, “Don’t limit yourselves on what you can reach!”

No, it’s not Christmas but yes it feels like one!

Misys, a company developing banking software applications proved that everyday can be Christmas and that eveyday you can lend a hand and give hope to people. And that’s what they did to the kids of the Philippine Christian Foundation.

As part of their yearly outreach program called “ChristMisys,” Misys team composed of their employees and volunteers, put up smiles on the faces of the children of PCF. The company gave out hygiene kits, pack of goods and Php 30,000 cash for the school’s sack of rice. Now PCF kids won’t be out of rice!

It was a day of fun filled with games, dancing, singing and happiness. The smiles on the faces of the PCF kids upon seeing Jollibee was priceless. They grooved and moved with the famous food chain character, hugging and squeezing him tight.

“I approve PCF’s vision of changing lives, I also share this vision. I also believe that our future will depend on our kids,” said Ms. Loreta Romero, Head Organizer, “ChristMisys.”

Thanks to Misys, the kids of PCF had an early Christmas!

Latter Day Saints Church (March 5, 2013)

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. – Hebrews 13:16

It is always a blessing to have people who are willing to share what they have. And it is a blessing for the PCF kids to be surrounded with people like them.

Last Tuesday, the Latter Day Saints Church visited PCF to extend their help and see the condition of the kids, the school and their enviroment. They were very much pleased about PCF’s vision of giving better future for the kids and offering a new lifestyle.

The group gave out 165 backpacks and 150 whiteboards which will be a good addition to the kids’ school supplies in time for the next school year.

Thanks to the ladies of the Latter Day Saint Church for giving hope to the PCF kids.

Young Minds, Pure Heart

“With a little help, you can make big change.”

This has been proven by four young exchange students from Germany. Fabian Niederhubec, Katharina con Braun, Myriel Camp and Nadine N’ Doassingar all helped the children of Philippine Christian Foundation to hope for more. All four are studying Development Studies at the Ateneo De Manila University through the exchange student program of their University, University of Marburg.

Fabian initiated a fundraising among his relatives and friends for the children of PCF. He donated a total of Php 50, 000 last March 15 at PCF Tondo. He said that it is better to do it that way since most of the Germans are not willing to help if they don’t know where the money is going. “But with PCF, it is easy because I know what they are doing and they have good projects,” said Fabian.

On the other hand, Katharina con Braun also did a fundraising of her own last Christmas. The money she raised was directly donated to the PCF Bank Account. She said that she wanted to do more and was encouraged to really help the Foundation that she personally knows.

The four students are also helping PCF in terms of its community research.

The Philippines rests on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is subject to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and over 20 typhoons a year, resulting in excessive flooding and severe storm damage.

Since 2009 the devastating effects of these typhoons has had a direct impact in the areas where PCF serves and so we have developed a module in our programme activities so that we can respond quickly and more efficiently when the natural disasters occur.

A special Disaster Fund has been set up where supporters can donate specifically for this purpose, enabling us make up relief packages. The relief packages contain, blankets, one set of clothing, a hygiene kits and basic food and water supplies to feed a family for 3 days.

Since 2009 PCF has provided relief aid to over 65,000 families and has become a vital component in supporting both our school children and their families.
